OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU AND ME

IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship for Mathematical Students in 2021

Applications are currently being invited for the IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program for Mathematical Students from Developing Countries in 2021.

Thanks to a generous donation by the winners of the Breakthrough Prizes in Mathematics, the IMU with the assistance of FIMU, maintains a fellowship program to support postgraduate studies. These are studies in a developing country leading to a PhD degree in the mathematical sciences.

It is, therefore, little wonder that nominees must have a consistently good academic record. They must also be seriously interested in pursuing a career in research and teaching in Mathematics.

Worth of Award

To this effect, the fellowship can cover the entire period of the doctoral program for up to four years of the student (nominee). The following costs up to a maximum of USD 10.000 per year can be covered by the grant.

  1. Full tuition fee.
  2. Accommodation expenses.
  3. Travel expenses to the host institution (if different from the home country).
  4. Basic living expenses that will depend on the cost of living in the country in which the student will study his/her doctoral program.

Eligibility

For you to be eligible for this program, you must understand that

  • The nomination form must be filled online and submitted by the nominator.
  • Students cannot apply themselves for the fellowship.
  • Paper applications are not accepted and
  • Changes after submission are not possible.

In like manner, here are the Conditions for the Nominator (Professional Mathematician):

They must be

  • Professional mathematicians (including those who have superannuated, but continue to mentor young students).
  • Nominators who have been mentoring the nominees most preferably.

Not leaving out the Student Nominees, here are the conditions they need to satisfy:

The student must be A) resident and B) a citizen of a developing country.

  1. Furthermore, the student must either
    • A) be pre-accepted to join a doctoral program in the first academic year after the time of selection in a university or research institution. This should be based in a developing country. OR
    • B) already be enrolled in a doctoral program in a university or research institution which is based in a developing country.
  2. Fortunately, there is no age limit for the student and
  3. Even bigger news is the fact that nominations for women students are strongly encouraged.

Fellowship Conditions

It is absolutely important to note that the fellowship

  1. is incompatible with any other scholarship.
  2. will be awarded starting from the time of selection. (i.e. without retrospective effect) This is in case of awardees already enrolled in a doctoral program, and from the time the awardee enrols in a recognized doctoral program otherwise.
  3. will be sanctioned for one year at a time and is renewable annually. This is based on satisfactory progress of the awardee and will cease to be awarded when the awardee completes the doctoral program. Or at the end of four years, whichever is earlier.
