Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Asian Development Bank offers a five-day online training program for journalists from Nepal in 2020.

The program, presented in English, will provide a unique opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge from experienced Reuters journalists, environment specialists, and climate change professionals. There will be an emphasis on producing high-impact stories for dissemination in the journalists’ own media with effective, accurate and timely content.

Climate Change is widely seen as the greatest threat to human development – perhaps even to human survival – in modern times. As the issue has moved gradually from the fringes of the news agenda to centre-stage, many journalists have difficulty grasping the implications and disentangling the mass of competing claims. We build the capacity of journalists to cover this critical issue and help them produce stories that matter to their audiences.

Reporting on climate change can be daunting, from making sense of the many acronyms to understanding the science, and how a shifting climate is affecting everything from agriculture to energy supplies to business.

This program helps journalists to identify, research and deliver clear, concise and accurate stories on climate change, its impact on the environment and the lives of ordinary people, and what can be done to help them adapt. It focuses on coverage that is relevant to both policymakers and general audiences.

• Experienced Thomson Reuters Foundation trainers help participants learn to write stories that are both powerful and accurate, and that bring home the likely impact of climate change to the lives of their audiences.
• There will be opportunities for participants to join a regional workshop on Climate Change in 2021. All participants will receive a Thomson Reuters Foundation and Asian Development Bank certificate.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be journalists working in Nepal. If they are not full-time members of staff, they should be able to demonstrate considerable experience as a freelancer, including very recent publications with client organisations.
• Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in their country, with a minimum of two years’ professional experience and a good level of spoken and written English.
